1. Turn on lights and allow to warm up for 20 minutes.

2. Turn on Better Light by flicking the switch on the portable hard drive unit.

3. Click on the Viewfinder icon on the desktop to open the software. The software has been set with a preferred Gray Balance and Profile. These defaults should be used.

4. Place object to be scanned on the copy stand with the Kodak grayscale and color targets.

5. Take scan back out of the camera back and replace with the ground glass. Roughly focus with the 45ei camera. Replace scan back in camera.

6. Take a Preview scan and using the eyedropper tool and Kodak targets check color balance and exposure. Exposure can be adjusted via the aperture on the lens (best to be around f8) or the line time setting in the software.

7. Fine focus is achieved by using the Focus tool and Better Light focus card: Place card about 1/3 of the way between the center of the object and edge. Click the Focus Tab and place focus guide on appropriate grid within the focus guide. Click Go and then Zoom in to the graph. Using the focus knob on the camera carefully adjust until the Green channel has the highest value and the bar has gone as far to the right as it will go.

8. The ISO sensitivity can be set between 200 and 400. Try to keep it at 400 or less. Keep in mind the lower the ISO the less noise you will potentially have. The baseline ISO is 125.

9. Enter file resolution. 16 bit is set as a default in the software.

10. Enter Filename and for the first scan of the session, cut and paste the “TechMet” file into the Info Box in the software. You can get to the Info Box by clicking on the “i" icon next to the file name box.

11. Scan.

12. A cursory QC of the image should be done and the file saved with Adobe RGB embedded in the file.

13. At the end of the session the files are uploaded to the LDPD server.
